Artist Statement

I chose to work with copper because I am drawn to its ever-evolving element. To me, my pieces have a very organic feel. As a native of Arizona, the Copper State, working with copper is a natural fit for me. And the metal’s malleable characteristic allows me to shape life into it.

Each piece starts as a flat sheet of copper that is heated with a torch to make it soft, and then hand-hammered on a leather sand bag to shape it. The pieces are cut out by hand so that they are all one of a kind and result in a life like, 3-D sculpture.

I am trying to convey natural beauty. I work with the metal to bring out the natural colors in the copper, never knowing what they will be when I begin; I have seen all the colors of the rainbow in my work. My art is very personal. I am not finished with a piece until I know it is complete.
